Light & Shadow in Acrylic Painting
with Derek Gundy
This workshop is a one day immersion into studying the effects of light and shadow on form. This learning opportunity is designed for artists who wish to bring more of a sense of light & shadow to their paintings. Acrylic is the medium we'll be using - although the concepts learned are applicable to all mediums.

Complementary Color Light & Shadow Study
in M. Graham Acrylic Paint by Derek Gundy
"Find beauty not only in the thing itself but in the pattern of the shadows, the light and dark which that thing provides."

Illustrator Derek Gundy
"Without light, we wouldn't see anything at all"

Artist Derek Gundy guides participants in painting exercises to see and develop form developing light and shadow in both black and white and color.

Understanding light and shadow and how to use it to your advantage artistically is hands down the most important aspect of creating highly successful designed imagery. This holds true for drawing, painting, illustration, and concept art. It is the one constant throughout my college level teachings and continues to be the core of what I look for in the best subjects for my work.

Participants will be provided with plenty of acrylic paints by M. Graham & Co, Derek's choice for paint in acrylics, watercolors, and gouache. Brushes will be provided as well unless a student wishes to bring their own. Brushes must stay with Black Barn Studio art the conclusion of the workshop.

Several paint surfaces will be provided, some for practice and testing values and colors, and two main surfaces will be provided for your light and shadow studies; ONE for black and white, and ONE for color.

Students will all complete light and shadow exercises together after a lecture showing multiple examples of light and shadow in art, and Derek's demo of the process of sighting values and all the key elements of a strong painting.

Light & Shadow is essential for all artwork to be successful.

In this Gundy painting of a young woman in Venice, Italy, during the pandemic, we see that Light & Shadow plays an important role.

The painting has a consistent light source (the sun) coming from one direction and casting shadows the other direction. The length of the shadow communicates the time of day (longer shadows is early or late). They also become valid contributors to the design of the paintings as they reach out to connect to other elements of the painting.

Of course the "Light & Shadow" has a double meaning in this painting, referring to the light source and cast shadows, but also the magnificent light fixtures of Venice.
